If you reside in the Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) service area, please see below for Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for a new program, available exclusively to members in this territory.
How does the program work? How do you select my supply plan?
We are partnering with EnergyMark, a local supplier exclusive to upstate New York, to offer 3% guaranteed savings: your natural gas supply rate will always be 3% lower than RG&E’s Standard Offer Service (SOS) rate.
What are the benefits of this program? Why would I participate in this program vs. going out to the market and finding my own rate?
Convenience and predictable, guaranteed savings: using the aggregate buying power of its members, Arcadia secures a guaranteed lower rate and manages the relationship with the supplier.
There are never any contracts or cancellation fees associated with your participation in this program (or in any of Arcadia's programs).
This program is a completely risk-free opportunity.
What is the contract term length? How long are savings guaranteed?
There is no contract associated with your participation in this program and savings are guaranteed as long as the program is offered.
How are you able to guarantee savings?
The aggregate buying power of Arcadia's members ensures a rate 3% lower than RG&E’s Standard Offer Service (SOS) rate.
What states/utilities are eligible for gas brokerage through Arcadia?
At this time, this program is only available to our members in upstate New York, in the Rochester Gas & Electric (RG&E) service territory. We hope to expand our offerings to more members in the future.
What is a therm? How does natural gas delivery work?
A British Thermal Unit (BTU) is the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of a pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit. A therm is a unit of energy equivalent to 103,700 BTUs; usually used to measure heat energy from burning natural gas and/or methane.
An average home uses about 2 therms per day.
Natural gas is generated by suppliers and distributed/delivered safely by underground (buried) pipeline.
How do I know who my supplier is now?
In general, most customers have never changed their natural gas supplier and default to the utility Standard Offer Service (SOS) rate. Supplier and rate details are listed on the monthly utility bill.
As a policy, for this program we are only brokering our members who are not already enrolled with another natural gas supplier.
How do I know what I’m paying now?
You can learn more about RG&E’s pricing structure by visiting the RG&E website here. There is no forward/future pricing for gas.
What does my bill look like now? What will my bill look like once I’ve been switched to EnergyMark?
Supplier and rate details are listed on the monthly utility bill.
The appearance of your bill will not change aside from listing EnergyMark as your natural gas supplier.
What if I cancel my Arcadia membership entirely? Am I automatically unenrolled from the supply rate if I cancel my membership?
If you discontinue your Arcadia membership, you will remain an EnergyMark customer unless you reach out to them directly to revert to the gas Standard Offer Service (SOS) rate.
What if I don’t want the new rate? Will I incur any cancellation fees?
There are never cancellation fees associated with your participation, and you may discontinue the program at any time without penalty. Simply reach out to our Customer Experience team at email@example.com and we’ll facilitate your account change as quickly as possible.
Are these “green” suppliers? How do we know where and how these suppliers are generating the natural gas? What about fracking?
EnergyMark is committed to a more sustainable way of accessing natural gas: the majority of EnergyMark’s gas is non-high volume hydraulically fractured gas, generated from shallow vertical wells. Non-hydraulic fracked gas avoids the use of water in the drilling process and is thus less energy-intensive than other fracking techniques.
How does this differ from RG&E’s generation?
There is no publicly available information for how RG&E generates its natural gas. It is likely that RG&E uses traditional disruptive fracking processes. Another benefit of your participation in this program is increased knowledge/awareness of how your energy is generated and its impact on the earth.
Are offsets available?
The best option for homeowners and renters is to look into buying certified 100% "carbon offsets" for their gas usage. Carbon offsets are exactly what they sound like: programs designed to take carbon out of the atmosphere, for example, by planting trees. There are even landfills and hog farms that collect gas ("methane capture") to put it back on the grid. It is possible to find carbon offset programs in your area so that you can give back to the local community while offsetting your gas usage.
At this time, we are not purchasing carbon offsets on your behalf. If you are interested in purchasing offsets associated with your natural gas usage, we recommend the following resources:
Are there any changes in reliability of delivery?
There are no changes in delivery. RG&E will continue to reliably deliver gas to your home. As always, if you have any pipeline or delivery issues, contact RG&E directly, as they maintain all infrastructure.
Where can I find my contract once I’ve signed up?
You will receive the contract in your confirmation email from Arcadia, and may also receive a copy in the mail from EnergyMark.
What if I move?
If you move within the RG&E service territory, please let us know: we will likely be able to transfer this offer to your new address.
If you move out of the RG&E service territory, your participation in this program will end as soon as your RG&E account is closed.
